Wanderer National Championships at Whitstable Yacht Club

Wanderer National Championships at Whitstable Yacht Club 28 and 29 June 2025 An event shared with the Wayfarer Class Open at Whitstable YC By Adam Wickenden There has been a feeling amongst the Wanderer fleet that someone in the near past has done something to upset the weather gods. We seem to have been experiencing two day events where at least one of the days featured either no wind or far too much wind. The forecast for the weekend 28th and 29th June was indeed causing worries amongst the fleet. The Saturday looked pretty good, the Sunday however was promising light winds across the whole country. This problem was on the minds of the 10 boats that turned up at Whitstable YC to contest our 2025 National Championships. As it turned out Whitstable returned perfect conditions on both days. Plus of course that classic Whitstable chop. Had we got lucky?

Wanderer Scotland – Tighnabruaich

Some photos and a map showing where we sailed to from the Wanderer Event at Tighnabruaich last weekend. Thanks to the Sailing School for hosting us, providing safety boat cover and advice on the day’s sailing. Truly a great weekend. Lovely company. Tighnabruaich must be one of the best dinghy sailing locations in the British Isles and well worth the effort of getting there.   -0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0- Our next cruising event – WandererWest – is at Mylor near Falmouth. We will be back in Scotland in August at Cramond near Edinburgh for the Wanderer Scotland Championships and a chance to sail under the Forth Bridges (weather permitting). Cramond is a peaceful historic village at the mouth of the River Cramond with Cramond Island offshore with connections with Miss Jean Brodie.

Racing at Whitstable YC

Wanderer West: June 2024 by Andrew Powell (abridged) Well, here I am again, writing about the fabulous time we had in Cornwall at Wanderer West. For three consecutive years we have stayed at Coastland’s campsite so I will start by listing all the reasons this site is the ideal place to base a dinghy event: 1. Coastland is a campsite dedicated to people who enjoy water sports. The simple fact that you can store, rig and launch your boat from the field adjacent to where you camp means my non-sailing wife can go off in the car with my crew’s non-sailing wife, and explore the lovely country-side, makes it a great holiday for all of us. 2. The campsite is lovely: you wake to look out on the beautiful River Fal, and the facilities are well-thought-out and beautifully maintained. Races at Grafham Water

Races at Grafham Water Sailing Club, May 25th and 26th 2024, by Dave Bardwell The Wanderer fleet gathered for their inaugural Open Meeting at Grafham Water Sailing Club over the weekend of 25th and 26th of May. Saturday afternoon initially provided shifty light breezes from the West North-West, backing as the wind speed steadily increased. This caused the Race Officer to shift marks between the four scheduled 45-minute duration back-to-back races. The three-lap course had four marks laid, with a beat, a tight two-sail starboard reach, a broad starboard three-sail “runny” reach, then a gybe onto a tight port three-sail reach before a beat through the committee boat gate. In the first race, Colin and Sally Gilbert in 1819 enjoyed the best start, and they led at the first mark by four or five boat lengths from Ian Simpson and Dave Bardwell in 1004, who then broached on the following
