Spring 2022
In ten days time our 2022 Inland Championships will again be hosted by Cotswold SC over the weekend of May 14/15. Please see here the Notice of Race. For those of you who are new to our class association, please do not be put off by thinking this event is only for out and out racers. All levels of skill and experience are most welcome and the best way of sharpening up your sailing skills is to sail with other Wanderers. Our racing is friendly but still competitive. Last September we held our inaugural meeting at Cotswold SC – indeed it was our 2021 Inland Championships – and this venue must be one of the prettiest inland sailing clubs in the country. West Oxfordshire Race Report 2022
Report from Adam Wickenden It’s not usually this windy here they claimed. Hmmmm. The Wanderer fleet heard the same thing last time they were at WOSC when Storm Hannah blew through. The brisk easterlies forecast only discouraged two entries from turning up, leaving five hardy crews to enjoy the delight of Wanderer racing and the Wanderer tradition of after sail food. Everybody (yes, everybody) also partook in the very un-Wanderer sport of swimming! Oh, we also had a fleet of Wayfarers to dodge – it was their Southern Area championships. Their presence turned out to be very useful, starting five minutes before us. ‘Follow the Wayfarers’ became the best way of sussing out WOSC’s complicated courses round its 11 basic blue cans, let alone different coloured buoys as special one-off marks. Come Sail Away in the Shadow of the Lake District
A new Wanderer event is due to take place at Arnside in August. The village is located in Cumbria on the scenic Kent Estuary south of Kendal. There are view across the estuary to the Lake District Fells. With a wide south west facing estuary, Arnside is a great place to sail. Winds tend to be stronger but more constant than on an inland water. A sea breeze may develop around midday. Tide against wind can result in exciting sailing conditions. The village has a long history of sailing. The estuary was the port for Kendal. The village’s first sailing club was set up in 1852. Arthur Ransome’s Swallow was built in the village and later kept on the estuary by a local teenager. Another of Arthur’s boat Coch-y-bonddhu was used to teaching sailing at a prep school on the sea front. Overlooked by Arnside Knott, at 522 feet high
