Wanderer National Championships at Whitstable Yacht Club 28 and 29 June 2025 An event shared with the Wayfarer Class Open at Whitstable YC By Adam Wickenden There has been a feeling amongst the Wanderer fleet that someone in the near past has done something to upset the weather gods. We seem to have been experiencing two day events where at least one of the days featured either no wind or far too much wind. The forecast for the weekend 28th and 29th June was indeed causing worries amongst the fleet. The Saturday looked pretty good, the Sunday however was promising light winds across the whole country. This problem was on the minds of the 10 boats that turned up at Whitstable YC to contest our 2025 National Championships. As it turned out Whitstable returned perfect conditions on both days. Plus of course that classic Whitstable chop. Had we got lucky?

Wanderer Scotland – Tighnabruaich

Some photos and a map showing where we sailed to from the Wanderer Event at Tighnabruaich last weekend. Thanks to the Sailing School for hosting us, providing safety boat cover and advice on the day’s sailing. Truly a great weekend. Lovely company. Tighnabruaich must be one of the best dinghy sailing locations in the British Isles and well worth the effort of getting there.   -0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0- Our next cruising event – WandererWest – is at Mylor near Falmouth. We will be back in Scotland in August at Cramond near Edinburgh for the Wanderer Scotland Championships and a chance to sail under the Forth Bridges (weather permitting). Cramond is a peaceful historic village at the mouth of the River Cramond with Cramond Island offshore with connections with Miss Jean Brodie.

Wanderer Class Owners’ Association 40th Anniversary

Looking ahead to the New Year, the 2025 AGM and Celebratory Dinner for the 40th Anniversary of the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association will take place at the RNLI College in Poole on Saturday 1st March 2025 in the Waterfront Suite. (RNLI College, Poole, West Quay Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 IHZ)   Members should have received their notification email about this and are warmly invited together with a guest or even making up a group to join us in celebrating 40 years of sailing with friends. Jill Davies, daughter of Ian Proctor the designer of the Wanderer, and Andy Peter, the founder chairman of the WCOA will be our guest speakers.    This promises to be a great event for the Association in a first class centre known for the hospitality and warmth that comes with the life saving mission of the RNLI and for the stunning views of the harbour.

Wanderer National Championships at Cotswold SC – 28/29th September

Cotswold Sailing Club occupies one of the lakes in the Cotswold Water Park complex south of Cirencester. We have visited on a number of occasions over the years for our Inlands. This was the first time they had hosted our Nationals.It was with some trepidation that the Wanderer fleet scanned the weather on the week leading up to the event. We were wondering quite how big the lake would have grown with the September rain, and if maybe we would have been able to sail over the road and into South Cerney SC. As it was, the lake was only up by a few inches. There was no rain over the course of the event, and the wind (mostly) played ball. 6 visitors from as far afield as Grafham and Whitstable joined 3 local boats on the Saturday morning for a midday start. 2023 Wanderer Inland Nationals at Cotswold Sailing Club

Saturday started with rain, but this was short-lived with the sun returning by the time the seven-strong fleet were rigging their boats for the 2023 Wanderer Class Owner’s Association Inlands, held once again at the Cotswolds Sailing Club. The race officer, Ray Workman, then briefed us on the “knitting pattern” 5p 8p 10p 4s 1s 9s (or thereabouts!) which constituted the course for the first race. The wind was as strong and gusty as forecast, but this did not give an inkling as to the shiftiness, which seemed in the event to be plus or minus 50 degrees at times, with gusts from both sides. And so to the racing.
