Wanderer Class Open Championship Races

Wanderer Open Races at Whitstable Yacht Club 29/30 June 2024

For the Gavin Barr trophy, safe and enjoyable sailing on the sea, and the fun of taking part.

• Visitor Wanderer sailors are very welcome at Whitstable YC.
• Please arrive any time on Friday 28^th June or Saturday morning 29^th. The race starts allow time on Saturday morning to rig (or look around Whitstable) and departure from early Sunday afternoon. You are welcome to make a long weekend of coming to Whitstable and stay overnight until Monday 1^st
• Bring your own boat or let us know if you can come as crew or helm for another boat.
• Races are about 1 hour duration around a course in Whitstable Bay, plus sailing offshore to and from the committee boat. Club racing is not hugely competitive, not for Wanderers anyway (!), but ensures a well-supported, safe way to enjoy sailing on the sea with the tides, breeze and friends.
• Visitor boat entry: £30, paid by the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association for any boat helmed or crewed by a WCOA member. If you are not a WCOA member and wish to join, annual membership (from 1^st January) is just £22.00. • Prizes for the series will include a category for non-Spinnaker boats.
• On Saturday we will have a supper on the club veranda (indoors if wet); meal choices (to be delivered by a local fish and chip restaurant) and payment to made on Saturday morning registration (cash or direct bank transfer).
• Campervan parking in the club boat compound on the West Quay of the harbour with 24 hour access to club facilities can be arranged free of charge – contact richard.maltby9@gmail.com; the club twin bunk room can be booked through the club office @ £27.50 per person – contact office@wyc.org.uk. Primrose Cottage camp and caravan site overlooking the town can be recommended. Local accommodation includes a Travelodge, Premier Inn and air B&Bs.

NOTICE OF RACE

1.     VENUE AND ORGANISING AUTHORITY

The event will be at Whitstable Yacht Club, 3-4 Sea Wall, Whitstable, Kent, CT5 1BX, Tel: 01227 272942, email office@wyc.org.uk. The organising authority is Whitstable Yacht Club (WYC) in conjunction with the Wanderer Class Owners Association (WCOA).  

2.     RULES & ELIGIBILITY

Racing will be governed by the 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS); the prescriptions of the RYA, the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association rules, and the WYC Sailing Instructions for the event. The WYC Sailing Instructions can be found on the WYC website.

The following amendments shall be made to the WYC Sailing Instructions for the purpose of this event:

2.2. The Wanderer entry fee will be £30 per boat. (The fee is paid by WCOA for a boat sailed by a helm or crew who is a current WCOA member.)

Participants should also note rule 13.1: Starting Intervals of 3-minute intervals shall be used.

3.     PROGRAMME

There will be 4 races. 3 races for the series alongside WYC club racing and one (non-series) fun race.

Saturday 29^th June.  HW is at 19.07.  2 back-to-back races are scheduled. Wanderer class races will take place alongside WYC club racing. 1^st Race 14.57.

10.30    Registration opens.    All participants shall register with WYC.

13.00    Briefing.

14.51    The warning signal for the first race on Saturday will not be before this time.

Sunday 30^th September.  HW is at 08.03. 2 races are scheduled.

1^st (Fun) Race 10.15: Le Mans Start from the beach; Finish on passing the Committee Boat wherever anchored for the start of the club race and to finish no later than 10.50.

2^nd race, Start 10.57 alongside WYC club racing.

4.     SCORING SYSTEM (alongside WYC club racing)

If the number of races is curtailed (e.g. due to sea conditions) the event One race alongside club racing shall be completed to constitute a series.  The “Low Points” Scoring system of Appendix A of the RRS will apply. When two races are completed 2 will count. When three races are completed 3 will count. The fun race does not count in the series.

5.     ADVERTISING:

The racing event is designated RRS Category A.

6.     ENTRY and REGISTRATION

The entry fee of £30 per boat is payable to Whitstable Yacht Club. Entry fees are paid by the Wanderer Class Owners Association for any boat sailed by a current WCOA member.  

Entries may also be taken on the day at Registration. As well as registering, for safety reasons entrants shall also complete the Declaration (signing on) sheet by the course board before going afloat, and shall sign in on coming ashore.

7.     COURSES

Courses will be set in Whitstable Bay. Competitors should allow sufficient time to sail out to the start.

8.     ACCOMMODATION AND SOCIAL

N.B.   A bunkroom is available at the club.   Please book through the club office at office@wyc.org.uk or phone: 01227 272942. Free campervan parking is available in the club compound on the harbour west quay. Please contact the organiser, Richard Maltby.

On Saturday 29th June there will be an evening supper on the club veranda (19.00 – 21.00). Suppers also need to be booked in advance by the club’s online booking system to know numbers in advance. https://bookwhen.com/wycsailevents. Meal choices and payment are to be made on Saturday morning at registration. The supper is open to event helpers and friends as well as to race sailors. 

9.     PRIZES

The Gavin Barr trophy, runner up trophy, 1^st non spinnaker boat prize, Start as You Mean to Go On trophy, fun race prize and other prizes will be awarded according to the number of entries, at the discretion of the Race Committee.

10.  RISK STATEMENT:

Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore inherently involves an element of risk. By taking part in the event, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that:

• they are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves, their crew and their boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event;
• they are responsible for the safety of themselves, their crew, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore;
• they accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions;
• their boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate;
• the provision of a race management team, patrol boats and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve them of their own responsibilities;
• the provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances;
• it is their responsibility to familiarise themselves with any risks specific to this venue or this event referred to in the Sailing Instructions and to attend any safety briefing held at the venue; and
• their boat is adequately insured, with cover of at least £3,000,000 against third party claims.
