WandererEast September 22 – September 25
Horning SC Swan Green, Lower Street, Horning, Norfolk, United Kingdom
WandererEast this year will be based at Horning Sailing Club in the heart of the bustling Norfolk Broads village of Horning. This gives us lots of sailing options depending on wind and weather:
- Ranworth Broad with coffee shop, Maltsters pub, cathedral of the broads and local nature reserve
- Wroxham broad with visit to Hoveton Great Broad nature trail
- Womack Staithe with a visit to St Benets Abbey, Hunters Yard historic fleet and the wherry trust
- Salhouse Broad
- Up the Ant to How Hill and Barton Broad
- And more…..
Cost £25 per person to cover use of Horning SC facilities (car and trailer parking, launching, showers, clubhouse etc) The cost is per person and NOT per boat
Practicalities
- All boats using the Broads need to pay a toll which is available from the Broads Authority (apply early, as they are not the quickest to respond). Alternatively, you can buy one over the counter from these outlets It is your responsibility to obtain this.
- Horning has 3 great pubs; The Swan Inn, The Ferry Inn, The New Inn. We’ll eat together in the evening, and re live our day’s sailing adventures. There’s also café’s and coffee shops
- Loads of accommodation in and around Horning, cottages, hotels and campsites
- Some basic shops in Horning, but Roys of Wroxham is only 2.5 miles away, with a good supermarket, and departments selling everything
- Good chandler in Wroxham 2.5 miles away
Sailing Conditions
- This is river sailing, and some is tree lined. There will be lots of tacking, and you will need some alternative form of propulsion (either an outboard or oars)
- The Broads have its own set of navigation bylaws. Enjoy!!!
- We may be able to leave the boats in the water on the sailing club pontoon overnight. Please check you insurance as some policies preclude this.
- The club has a good slip and secure trailer storage
- There is minimal tidal flow
- If winds are favourable, we may get as far as Wroxham, Ludham or Potter Heigham bridge. All of these are low, and require the mast to be lowered.
- Most mooring is free, but some places make a small charge. Please have cash available.
- Mobile signal can be patchy and there is no signal at all in Ranworth (unless you climb the church tower!!!) Please bring VHF if you have one.
Non sailors
- Lots of good walking, cycling and local attractions
- Only 12 miles from beautiful sandy beach at Walcott
- ½ hour to Norwich with its award winning castle museum and cathedral (limited busses from Horning)
You MUST obtain the free EVENT PARTICIPATION ticket (in addition to the purchase of the event ticket) with the necessary declarations completed.
