SUMMARY:Arnside Weekend Wander 21
DESCRIPTION:Racing and Cruising in the River Kent Estuary\nA new Wanderer event is due to take place at Arnside in August. The village is located in Cumbria on the scenic Kent Estuary south of Kendal. There are view across the estuary to the Lake District Fells. \nWith a wide south west facing estuary\, Arnside is a great place to sail. Winds tend to be stronger but more constant than on an inland water. A sea breeze may develop around midday. Tide against wind can result in exciting sailing conditions.  The village has a long history of sailing. The estuary was the port for Kendal. The village’s first sailing club was set up in 1852.  Arthur Ransome’s Swallow was built in the village and later kept on the estuary by a local teenager. Another of Arthur’s boat Coch-y-bonddhu was used to teaching sailing at a prep school on the sea front. \nOverlooked by Arnside Knott\, at 522 feet high the country’s lowest Marilyn\, the village lies in the Arnside Silverdale Area of Natural Beauty at top end of Morecambe Bay. The area is characterised by low wooded limestone hills interspersed with flower rich meadows\, making for good walking. Arnside Knott is one of the best sites for butterflies in the North of England. \nArnside developed as a gentile holiday resort after the arrival of the railway in 1857\, which crosses the estuary on a viaduct 552 yards long. Sirens warn of the incoming tidal bore.  The village regularly appears in best places to live lists\, including the Sunday Times 2021 list which mentioned the friendly sailing club. There are several places to stay in village\, including Air BNB and nearby camp sites. \nThe Sailing Club increased its membership by 50% in 2020 partly as result of being able to offer training at low tide and through the introduction of paddle board. The Club owns a Wanderer and a Wayfarer. There is another Wanderer in club which belongs to Alasdair Simpson. Other club boats include Hartley 12s. \nDepending on the weather we hope to be able to arrange racing on one day and a cruise to Holme Island off Grange-over- Sands on the other day. Whilst there is only a two to three hour window at high tide when the water is deep enough to sail\, with distinctive landmarks on either side of the estuary it is possible to feel that you are sailing somewhere. When not sailing there will opportunities to walk along the coast\, climb Arnside Knott\, canoe or paddleboard at low tide. There should be a chance to meet in local pubs for a meal in the evening. \nOn Sunday evening there will be a concert by Luna\, a folk duo from Sunderland Point\, a village at the mouth of the River Lune\, south of Lancaster which is cut off at high tide. Luna are Jo Powell and Scotty Wilson\, a fellow Wanderer sailor. \nFor more Information and book a place please use the RSVP below. \nView of the shore from the water. SUMMARY:WandererFest 2021
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This event has been postponed\, the date above is the new date.\nThis is the premier event of the Wanderer calendar and attracts the largest number of WCOA members and crew to Cobnor Field on the southern tip of the entrance to Bosham Channel. Come for a day or two or stay for the complete event – no problem. \nThe WandererFest site is on the private Cobnor Estate and a perfect location for our caravans\, motor- homes\, and tents. There are B & Bs and hotels nearby for those of us who prefer a decent mattress. \nDaily cruises – choose from a shortish one to a longish one – are organised by Cruise Master Ray Tennant – with Emsworth\, East Head\, Prinstead\, Dell Quay\, and Bosham among the various destinations hopefully with a hostelry or ice cream stall nearby. \nThere are ample opportunities to exchange rigging and sailing tips and we hope Ian Porter will be able to return yet again with his own unique way of showing how to get the best out of your boat. \nThe culinary highlight is the Saturday night Curry’n’KormaFest prepared by a local restaurant and served up in Cobnor Field as the sun begins to set. \nThere is the WandererFest Coarse Boules knockout tournament in Cobnor Field which becomes increasingly tense as we approach the Grand Final. I hope Mike Powell will bring his telescope again; seeing Saturn’s rings is quite an experience. \n\n\n\n\nRobin Gabbitas organises two splendid barrels of real beer (£2.50 a pint last time) and a wonderfully old fashioned marquee (supplied by Ray’s connections with Southbourne Sea Scouts) acts as our base. Putting it up and taking it down is part of the fun of WandererFest. WCOA spends a small fortune in hiring very smart Ladies and Gents flush loos which have been utterly reliable (or maybe not for this year).

SUMMARY:Gavin Barr Trophy Race 2021
DESCRIPTION:First run in 2019 to salute the immense achievements of Gavin Barr in promoting and encouraging Wanderer sailing. The trophy is a unique piece of stainless steel artwork depicting a Wanderer craft. \nThere is high tide racing on the Saturday followed by the legendary WYC barbecue at the side of the verandah Sunday’s cruise\, usually with a pub destination in mind\, has a good chance of viewing the increasing seal population at Horse Sand. There is even a wild rumour that free car parking might become a reality. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n GBTR21 NOR\n \n Posted:\n May 8\, 2021 |\n \n 0 comments \n \n \n You need to be logged in to view this content. SUMMARY:Try-A-Wanderer 2021
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Marlow\, which is the home club for John and Jenny Renouf\, the Chariman and Membership Secretary\, to have a go sailing a Wanderer on the Thames. \nIt is probably the most relaxed club in the country on the grassy banks upstream from Bisham Abbey. Launching and recovery is a doddle. There is no fixed agenda….. we tinker with our boats and exchange tips and then have some fun sailing which starts when someone shouts “Go”.

SUMMARY:Try A Wanderer
DESCRIPTION:Update: This event is unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Please come back to the website soon for events later in the season. \n  \nThe Wanderer Association\, with kind permission of Marlow Sailing club is holding the latest Try a Wanderer event. This will give you a chance to sail the boat and talk to Wanderer owners. \nThis is also an opportunity  for other Wanderer Members to get onto the water and cruise a short stretch of the river Thames \nBook a place please contact: John Renouf – 1953jgr@gmail.com \nThis event has been running for years and is a firm feature on the calendar of Marlow SC – the home club for our Chairman and Membership Secretary John and Jenny Renouf.\nThe club is beautifully located on the Berkshire bank of the Thames just above Bisham Abbey\, a couple of minutes from the A404(M) which connects the M40 and the M4 and just five minutes from junction 4 of the M40. \nMarlow SC is the most relaxed sailing club in the world. Launching and recovery is a short gentle slip and the event is also helpful to those interested in buying a Wanderer or who are new to sailing and want to gain experience on a sheltered stretch of water (once the Sunday morning rowing scullers have exhausted themselves) either pottering around or taking part in the odd very short race (when John shouts “Go” between nibbling at your picnic. There’s a fine clubhouse with water boiling facilities and loos.

SUMMARY:West Oxfordshire Race Meeting
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: I’m afraid this meeting is cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Please come back to the website for more events later in the season. \n  \nPop this weekend in your diary and dust off the road base for your Wanderer dinghy trailer. It should prove to be a busy and fun event with 5 races planned over two days\, sharing the sheltered water with the Wayfarers.  Our fourth year at this venue. \nAs ever this is FREE race entry to Wanderer Association Members  \nThere will be separate starts for the two fleets if numbers justify it\, with Wanderers following Wayfarer starts by 5 minutes\, meaning they don’t have to sail through us and we get to chase them and see which way pays up the first beat or where people can hold spinnakers without having to experiment ourselves…while watching and learning from their racier types. \nIt would be great to see a good number of boats at this geographically central venue\, and the event would provide everyone with a great early season shakedown and a valuable sighter for those working up to the National Championships. \nIt really does helpto know who’s planning to take part.  Please contact WCOA Events Coordinator Philip Meadowcroft ASAP\, see event details.   I look forward to seeing as many as possible at West Oxford Sailing Club. \n\nHot food will be available at breakfast and during the lunch break on both race days and dinner will be available on the Saturday evening at extra cost. Camping on-site available. \n2020 NOTICE OF RACE WOSC WCOA
