SUMMARY:WandererFest 2024
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately WandererFest 2024 has been cancelled. \nOwing to the exceptional high tide\, low pressure and storm force wind experienced over the night of 8th – 9th April the sea came over the seawall at Mengeham Rythe SC\, flooding the club house and campus to a depth of 8 feet. Property\, equipment\, boats and facilities have suffered extensive damage submerged by the sea water lake.  Although the clean-up has started\, the club will not be in a position to host the event  this year. Our thoughts are very much with Melvyn Powell and MRSC volunteer members\, some of whom have also suffered flood damage to their homes\, as they set about the task. \nMembers with bookings will be issued a refund.

The race starts allow time on Saturday morning to rig (or look around Whitstable) and departure from early Sunday afternoon. You are welcome to make a long weekend of coming to Whitstable and stay overnight until Monday 1st\nBring your own boat or let us know if you can come as crew or helm for another boat.\nRaces are about 1 hour duration around a course in Whitstable Bay\, plus sailing offshore to and from the committee boat. Club racing is not hugely competitive\, not for Wanderers anyway (!)\, but ensures a well-supported\, safe way to enjoy sailing on the sea with the tides\, breeze and friends.\nVisitor boat entry: £30\, paid by the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association for any boat helmed or crewed by a WCOA member. If you are not a WCOA member and wish to join\, annual membership (from 1st January) is just £22.00. When two races are completed 2 will count. When three races are completed 3 will count. DESCRIPTION:Wanderer Scotland\nSaturday 18th – Monday 20th May 2024 \nINFORMATION \n\nThe first ever event of the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association to be held in Scotland will be at Tighnabruaich on the Kyles of Bute: sheltered coastal waters and stunning scenery.\nBased at Tighnabruaich Sailing School\, Carry Farm\, 3 miles south of the village. On site camping overlooking the shore\, space for motorhomes and three lodges available to hire + other nearby accommodation options.\nBoats can be left on site before and after the weekend\, if combining the event with a longer holiday in Scotland. Apart from sailing\, enjoy walking\, historic houses\, local crafts\, an indoor swimming pool and breath-taking views.\nA three day event: arrive Friday 17 th May; cruises with safety boat escort on Saturday 18th\, Sunday 19th and Monday 20th. Possible passages include north to Tighnabruaich itself and the secret anchorage at Caladh\, across the Kyle to Ettrick Bay on the Isle of Bute\, and round the other side of the peninsula to beaches accessible only by boat.\nIn the evening we plan to go in a different pub or restaurant each evening to eat and socialise.\nWe will also set up a Wanderer Scotland Whatsapp group which can be very useful for participants to contact each other prior to\, during and after the dates of the event..\n\nBookings – Next Steps: \n1. SUMMARY:Weekend Racing at West Oxfordshire SC
DESCRIPTION:Wanderer and Wayfarer Racing at West Oxfordshire Sailing Club \nSaturday April 20th and Sunday April 21st \n  \nThis would have been the 7th joint event however having cancelled 2020 and 2021 due to COVID\, 2024 will be the 5th year everyone gathers for this joint event.  The club is located 6 miles from Witney on the B4449.  By comparison to others our lake is smaller which makes for some interesting racing around the marks.  WOSC is a recognised RYA Training Centre.  There are ample slipways and plenty of parking for visitor cars and boats.  There is 24 hour access to the club and the clubhouse which is fully equipped with a kitchen\, bar and changing rooms\, toilets etc.  Visitors can bring campervans\, caravans or camp on the ample grass area from Friday 19th allowing plenty of time for those who wish to rig the night before through to Sunday 21st.  For those that want greater comfort there is a Premier Inn and Travelodge in Witney and of course B&B’s/Airbnb in the local area. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAn entry fee of £35.00 is payable on the day or on the club web site. The fee will be paid by the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association for a boat having a helm or crew that is a paid up member.  \nThere will be three races on the Saturday starting at 1200 and two back to back races on the Sunday from 1000 to allow visitors to travel home in good time.  On both Saturday and Sunday morning bacon/sausage rolls will be available at a small cost. Lunch at £4 will be available on Saturday and Sunday at  for club racers and of course visitors. There is entertainment and local art on display all over town.   \nThe town is criss-crossed by numerous small alleys\, notably Squeeze Gut Alley which everyone needs to try. The Old Neptune PH nearby\, known as the “Neppy” is not next to the beach or by it\, but actually stands right on the beach.   \n   \nWhitstable Yacht Club (WYC)\, founded in 1902 next to the harbour for racing smacks and barges\, is today one of the largest clubs in England. DESCRIPTION:The event is based at Ullswater Yacht Club on the quiet road to Howtown on the north east side of the lake. We plan daily cruises to places such as Howtown\, Aira Force and Glenridding at the head of the lake with perhaps an odd race.. With Hellevyn raising above the lake\, Ullswater is seen by many as the most scenic lake. There will be a full programme of evening social events. Facilities at Ullswater Yacht Club are excellent. There is camping on site with hotels\, bed and breakfast\, caravan and self catering accommodation nearby. Due to planning conditions camper vans can only stay at the club on Friday and Saturday nights on the Birkett Fields\, but there are two caravan sites which all but next door.\n \nBookings\n \nThe day rate is £30 per person a day\, with camping at £20 a night (camper vans £25). This is a great event for families and it is lovely seeing all the children enjoying themselves. \nAt the start of the week there will be people on hand to assist you with your boat set up and perhaps a bit of coaching to hone your skills. On Thursday we will be sailing to a picnic spot and there will be a RIB in attendance. There may even be hot dogs on offer. \nThat’s all that is planned at the moment but of course you do not have to take part in any of it. Everything is optional\, even beer o’clock which is an opportunity to meet everyone. This year the event is being held at a new venue in Chichester Harbour – Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club\, Hayling Island – where there will be space for caravans\, motor-homes\, and tents. There are B &amp; Bs and hotels nearby for those of us who prefer a decent mattress. \n\nWith grateful thanks to WCOA and MRSC member Melvyn Powell and John Barnett\, Commodore MRSC\, our agreement with the club allows for 30 boats (plus MRSC member boats) and to date (June 27th ) 14 boats have booked. Rules: The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 2021 – 2024\, the Prescriptions of the Royal Yachting Association\, Class Rules and West Oxfordshire Sailing Club’s Sailing Instructions. DESCRIPTION:The LBW (aka Laidback Weekend) will be from October 7 to October 10\, again on the River Dart\, with cruising to Totnes and Dartmouth on the Saturday and Sunday. \nI am planning to recreate 2021’s event but without the horrendous weather and biblical rain we endured.   \nIn 2022 we will be based in Stoke Gabriel just upstream from Glampton where we were based this year.   \nThis will permit (I am assured !) an earlier and longer window to access the water.  We will have access throughout the weekend to the facilities at the prettily located waterside premises of Stoke Gabriel Boating Association.   Arrangements have been made with two private landowners – one to park our cars (at no charge) just yards from where we will be launching and another to take our road trailers (which are not allowed where we will be parking our cars). \nGiven the excellent way in which The Manor Inn at Galmpton (TheManorInnGalmpton@gmail.com phone 01803 661100) served up our Saturday night fleet dinner\, landlord Jonathan is happy to welcome us back and has reserved all his five bedrooms rooms again for WCOA members.  Just say Wanderer when you book and you should be fine.        Motor homes/caravans can be booked at various places including Galmpton Touring Park\, TQ5 0EP\, and Ramslade Caravan and Motorhome Club Camp in Stoke Gabriel (close by the road trailer storage).

DESCRIPTION:This is the premier event of the Wanderer calendar and attracted 61 WCOA members and spouses to Cobnor Field in 2021 on the southern tip of the entrance to Bosham Creek. Come for a day or two or stay for the complete event – no problem. \nThis is part of the private Cobnor Estate and a perfect location for our caravans\, motor-homes\, and tents. There are B & Bs and hotels nearby for those of us who prefer a decent mattress. \nDaily cruises\nChoose from a shortish one to a longish one – will be organised by a new Cruise Master now that Ray Tennant has stood down – the highlight being the trip south to East Head though the ice cream cruise to Dell Quay SC at the northern end of Chichester Harbour is a favourite. The culinary highlight is the Friday night Curry’n’KormaFest prepared by a local restaurant and served up in Cobnor Field as the sun begins to set. If there is time\, there is the WandererFest Coarse Boules tournament in Cobnor Field which becomes increasingly tense as we approach the Grand Final. I hope Mike Powell will bring his telescope again; seeing Saturn’s rings is quite an experience. \n\n\n\n\nRobin Gabbitas organises two splendid barrels of real beer (£2.50 a pint last time) and it would be great if Barry Lowe can bring his Mongolian Tent alongside our usual main marquee. DESCRIPTION:This is now our regular opening event for the season shared with the Wayfarer COA. Competitors will be required to undertake to sail in compliance with the Charter\, which can be found at the front of the RYA rule book and at the point of event entry. \n\n2. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY\n2.1.  The regatta is open to all boats of the Wanderer class whose helm or crew is a fully paid-up member of the WOCA at the time of entry. \n2.2  Crews may enter by completing the entry form from 09h30 on the morning of the event. \n3. FEES\n3.1.  An Entry Fee of £30 is payable on the day by the Class Association on behalf of each boat in which the competing owner is either crew or helm. \n4. SCHEDULE\n4.1.  A competitors’ briefing will be held in front of the club balcony at 11h00.The regatta will be five races of approximately 60 minutes’ duration\, with four to count. If the number of races is curtailed (e.g. due to the weather) then one completed race will constitute a series\, no discard if there are two races\, and one discard for three\, four\, or five races. \n4.2 Start times will be approximately as follows: \n\n	1st Race Sat 12h00\n	2nd Race Sat 14h30\n	3rd Race Sat 16h00\n	4th Race Sun 11h00\n	5th Race Sun 13h00\n\n4.3 The scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race is 11h55. If more than 20 (twenty) entries are received then flights may be organised. In this case\, the regatta will be five races of approximately 50 minutes’ duration\, with four to count. The second flight start times will be five\nminutes after those of the first flight for each fleet. \n5. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS\n5.1 The Sailing Instructions are available on the club website. Additional copies will be made available at the time of entry.\n6. PRIZES\n6.1.  There will be prizes awarded for 1st -3rd places. Other spot prizes may be awarded depending on the size of the entry. \n\n7. RISK STATEMENT\nRule 4 of the Racing Rules of Sailing states: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.” Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore involves an element of risk. By taking part in any of the events covered by this notice of\nrace\, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that:\n\na)  They are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves\, their crew and their boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event;\nb)  They are responsible for the safety of themselves\, their crew\, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore; \nc) They accept responsibility for any injury\, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions; \nd) Their boat is in good order\, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate; \ne) The provision of a race management team\, patrol boats\, umpires and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve them of their own responsibilities; \nf) The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance\, particularly in extreme weather conditions\, as can be practically provided in the circumstances.\n8. INSURANCE\nEach participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of at least £ 2\,000\,000 or the equivalent.\n9. SUMMARY:River Dart Laidback Weekend 2021
DESCRIPTION:Arriving at Dartside Quay\, TQ5 0EH\, Galmpton\, during Friday afternoon October 1 and packing up late Sunday October 3 or Monday morning October 4. \nDartside has an excellent low gradient slipway and overnight berthing on the adjacent hard. \nAccommodation is available nearby at: \n\nGalmpton Holiday Park  for caravans and motorhomes (but\, sorry\, no tents).\nThe Manor Inn in Galmpton where all five bedrooms have been allocated to attending Wanderers.  Three of those who booked The Manor last year (Alasdair Simpson\, Mike Powell\, and myself) have retained their reservations but\, with the Kings and the Hamiltons unable to attend this year\, there could be two rooms available.
