SUMMARY:Arnside Wanderer Dinghy Event Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd May
DESCRIPTION:Location – Ashmeadow Slipway\, Promenade\, Arnside LA1 0AD\n \nA chance for Wanderer Dinghy Owners to sail in the scenic estuary at Arnside in Cumbria. \nWe plan running a race on one day and a cruise out into Morecambe Bay towards Holme Island and Grange-over-Sands on the other. \nThere are three Wanderers kept at the Club\, including two club boats. \nWe plan to meet up in a local pub on Saturday after sailing and on Sunday in the Club’s historic Club House in old customs bonded warehouse. On Saturday night there is a concert by Chris James an award winning blue’s guitarist. To book https://www.tickettailor.com/events/arnsidesailingclub/2153938 \n  \nWanderers at Arnside \nArnside \nArnside is located on the Kent Estuary south of Kendal in the Arnside-Silverdale National Scenic Area. The estuary opens out into Morecambe Bay. There are outstanding views across the estuary to the Lake District Hills. Arnside grew up as a scenic holiday resort in the nineteenth century after the opening of the railway with water- based activities as one of its attractions. The railway crosses the estuary on a viaduct above the village. \nArnside has a long sailing history. Historically the estuary was the port for Kendal. The Victorians held regattas. The village’s first Sailing Club was set up in 1857. Crossfields built Morecambe Bay Prawners and yachts in the village from the 1840s to the 1940s. Arthur Ransome’s Swallow was built in Arnside and kept on the estuary by local teenager in the 1930s. \nThe tide often comes in with a Bore. This is followed by a two-to-three-hour sailing window. Winds tend to fairly consistent compared to an inland lake especially if there is a sea breeze. Tide against wind can create exciting sailing conditions. \nThe area is good for walking. Arnside Knott\, one of the best viewpoints in the country overlooks the village and there is an excellent path along the coast. If the weather is unsuitable there are nearby historic houses and museums to visit \n \nArnside Sailing Club \nThe current Arnside Sailing Club was set up in 1958. It has around 300 members including partners and children. The Club offers sailing\, paddleboarding and kayak. It is affiliated to both the RYA and Paddle UK and is a RYA Training Centre at Killington near Sedbergh. DESCRIPTION:WandererEast \non the Norfolk Broads based at Hickling SC \nFour Days of organised cruising Tuesday September 23rd to Friday September 26th.  \nBerths available at Hickling Broad SC for 1 – 7 nights from\nSaturday 20th to Saturday 27th September 2025 \nIn response to popular demand we return to Hickling Broad SC this year for 4 days of organised cruising on the Broads. Book for 1-4 nights if you plan to arrive on Monday 22nd September to leave any time until after sailing on Friday 26th or book for any 5-7 nights from arriving on Saturday 20th to leaving on Saturday 27th September. \nOne cruise that we greatly enjoyed last year was to Horsey Mere. This is by a narrow channel for which an alternative means of propulsion (oars\, paddles\, engine) may well be required. The wide expanse of water at Horsey makes for good sailing. Moorings (fee applies) and a café are available at Horsey Staithe. Another choice which most of us did not manage to reach last year is a lovely sail across Martham Broad nature reserve to West Somerton.  A great place to see Marsh Harriers\, and the water can be crystal clear if the conditions are right).  \nNeil Lawrence\, our cruise leader\, is also planning to go further on the Broads river network to the bustling riverside village of Potter Heigham\, known for its medieval bridge (free mooring\, pub\, coffee shop\, café\, supermarket). To go beyond Potter Heigham\, we recommend practice at dropping and raising your mast to pass under the bridge.  (you will need oars / paddle / outboard as there are 2 low bridges about 500 metres apart.) From there we can continue to the beautiful wooded Womack Water. \nThere will be no safety boat support. Cruising-in-company is recommended. Note. You will need a Broads Authority short visit toll for sailing in the area. To make things easy WCOA will take payment for the toll charge with your booking and provide the permit on arrival\, unless you already have a Broads Authority permit.  \nThe nearest supermarket is Tesco Stalham (3 miles from Hickling).  For non-sailors\, Hickling nature reserve is well worth a visit\, and it’s a 2 mile drive to the sandy beach at Sea Palling.      \n  \nAccommodation  \nHickling Camp site be open for camping or campervans. SUMMARY:Wanderer Scottish Open Championship at Cramond Boat Club Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:  \nInaugural Scottish Open Championship and Cruising Event 8th-10th August 2025 \n\n\nThis will be the first ever Wanderer race event to be organised in Scotland and at Edinburgh on tidal waters\, thanks to Leonie Griffin at her home club. It will be well worth making the trip for anyone coming north of the border for cruising on the first day and two days of racing in the club’s open regatta. The dates coincide with the Edinburgh Festival for any members interested in enjoying the cultural as well as sailing fun.   \nAccommodation \nThere are many options available \nClubhouse – there is shared space in the hall for those wishing to sleep overnight in a communal setting. This would involve tidying away bed rolls etc during the day. There are limited kitchen facilities -kettle\, microwave\, hob\, oven\, small fridge and freezer\, crockery/cutlery etc \nCampervans – There is space for several motorhomes next to the clubhouse. SUMMARY:WandererFest 2025
DESCRIPTION:CRUISING \nSailors returning to the rural tranquility and natural beauty of Cobnor Point will be well accustomed to the arrangements for camping and cruising.  We are delighted to be welcomed back to the Cobnor Estate. Hot showers and hired loos will be provided.  Bookings can be made from Sunday July 13th\, fleet cruising starts on Tuesday 15th July to Friday 18th July with the option of a “Sunset” race with Bosham SC on the evening of Friday 18th July. Members depart Saturday 19th July. We have exclusive use of the site to camp and sail for any or all of the days. Tides are favourable for day cruising. \n Cruising on the principle of cruising-in-company will take place on each day Tuesday to Friday.  As there will be no support boat sailors should be competent and equipped to sail independently in marine conditions. We will start with a briefing at 10 am to be on the water by 11 am. Destinations may include Dell Quay\, East Head\, Thorney\, Emsworth and Langstone. Or do your own pottering. The slipway has an electronic winch for recovery of boats. There is also the option of taking part in the Bosham S.C. evening race on Friday 18th July. \nFor camping\, tents or motorhomes\, select a pitch in the field known as Wood Park North and South. Campers should park their cars in the field. The visitor car park field to the left of the lane on arrival is the place\, nearest to the shore\, also to park boats. There are  loos and showers located near the boat park and we will also have hired loos in the camp field. The “pavilion” next to the launch area will be available for use of the fridge\, brewing tea or coffee\, or for watching\, with thanks to Bosham SC for the use. No cooking however is permitted in the pavilion.   \nSelf-catering will again be the norm. Members may also enjoy rambling around the lovely country and coastal walks. Dogs are welcome so long as your dog doesn’t bark a lot\, is under control at all times and poop in the camping field is scooped. The local pub at Chidham may well be the focus of evening activities. DESCRIPTION: \n  \nWanderer Scotland – Tighnabruaich  Sat 17th – Mon 19th May \nTighnabruaich Sailing School\, Carry Farm\, Tighnabruaich PA21 2AH \n \nJoin for us three days sailing in probably the best dinghy cruising locations in the British Isles. Last year\, we had three days of glorious sunshine with gentle breezes making for perfect dinghy cruising conditions. \nThe Sailing School is situated on the Kyles of Bute at Carry Farm on the remote Ardlamont peninsula four miles south of Tighnabruaich.  The Kyles which surround the Isle of Bute separating it from the mainland are one of the most scenic areas in Scotland. \nSailing Plans \nEach day depending on the weather we plan sailing to a beach for a picnic lunch. \nRubha Dudh a remote beach on the Isle of Bute \n  \nFrom Carry Farm\, we can sail in three different directions: \n\nNorth up the West Kyle to Tighnabruaich to the secret harbour at Caladh and then up Loch Riddon or alternatively down the East Kyle to Burnt Isles and the isolated beach at Wreck Bay.\nRound Ardlamont Point to remote beaches on the shores of Loch Fyne accessible only by water with breathtaking views of the Isle of Arann and its mountains. With Loch Fyne being over four miles wide and eight miles of water separating us from Isle of Arann\, this is a real sea sailing experience.\nSouth along the Isle Bute Shore past the beach at Ettrick Bay\, which has a cafe to St Ninan’s Bay or the uninhabited Isle of Inchmarnock\, which lies a mile off Bute. We might see seals\, whilst sailing\n\nFor a short day we could sail to the pub at Kames or stop Tighnabruaich where they are pubs and cafes. \nThe Sailing School will be providing safety boat cover for us of each of the three days and sailing advice if needed. Last year their help and little knowledge proved invaluable in running the event. \nCarry Farm  \nSituated on the shores of the West Kyle\, the 66 acre\, Carry Farm offers camping\, space for camper vans and four holiday lodges\, all overlooking the sea. The farm has its own beach where you can brave the Scottish water warmed by the Gulf Stream and go for an early morning dip. There are also showers and laundry facilities. \nCamping at Carry Farm \nThe farm’s animals include rare Hebridean sheep\, goats\, donkeys and hens. You may see Red Squirrels in the woods\, oystercatchers and eider ducks on the shore\, and butterflies in the wildflower rich grassland. \nThe farm has a café and craft gallery \nStaying at Carry Farm \nCamping is £15 per person per night \nThere is also space for camper vans. \nThe Lodges (book early) are £540 for three days \nTo book contact the farm direct https://www.carryfarm.co.uk \nOther accommodation in the area \nThere is also accommodation nearby at Kames\, Tighnabruaich and Portavadie Marina \nTighnabruaich \nTighnabruaich grew up as a select resort for the wealthy of Glasgow with large Victorian villas lining the shore. Up till 1960s when the road from the west was built\, the steamer was the main means of getting to the village. PSS Waverley still regularly visits the village. There are palm trees in the gardens. \nOther activities in the area \nThe walk along the shoreside single-track road to Kames is very pleasant. From Tighnabruaich you can walk east along the shore for several miles through woods. Other walks in the area tend to be rougher. Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute is well worth visiting. Benmore Botanic Gardens with their giant redwoods are within driving distance. Portavadie Marina has a spa and swimming pool. From Portavadie\, you can catch the ferry to Tarbet. \nEvening Plans \nEach evening\, we plan to go to a local pub or restaurant or even a barbecue on the beach \nGetting to Tighnabruaich \nWhilst Tighnabruaich is a long way from anywhere\, it is well worth the drive. Whichever way you come the last part of the drive is very scenic. You can either catch the ferry across the Clyde from Gourock (the return ticket is about half price if you buy it in advance through the Western Ferries website) or travel along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond round the head of Loch Long on A83 over the Rest and Be Thankful Pass and down the Cowal Peninsula. \n Alternatively\, you can catch the Calmac ferry from Wemyss Bay to the Isle of Bute and then the Colintraive ferry back to the mainland. SUMMARY:Wanderer Inland Championship at West Oxfordshire SC
DESCRIPTION:Wanderer Inland Championship (and Wayfarer Racing) at West Oxfordshire Sailing Club \nSaturday May 10th and Sunday May 11th 2025 \n  \nThe club is located 6 miles from Witney on the B4449.  By comparison to others our lake is smaller which makes for some interesting racing around the marks.  WOSC is a recognised RYA Training Centre.  There are ample slipways and plenty of parking for visitor cars and boats.  There is 24 hour access to the club and the clubhouse which is fully equipped with a kitchen\, bar and changing rooms\, toilets etc.  Visitors can bring campervans\, caravans or camp on the ample grass area from Friday 9th allowing plenty of time for those who wish to rig the night before through to Sunday 11th.  For those that want greater comfort there is a Premier Inn and Travelodge in Witney and of course B&B’s/Airbnb in the local area. \n  \n\n\n\n\nInformation on access\, maps of the lake\, photos etc. can be found on the website at https://www.wosc.org.uk/ or email your local organiser michaelewington@outlook.com.  \n  \nBookings will be made through the club here. DESCRIPTION:on the Norfolk Broads based at Hickling Broad SC \nWednesday October 2nd to Saturday October 5th 2024 \nThis year our venue for WandererEast will be the Norfolk Broads with the opportunity to discover the tranquil waters of the northern Broads from our base at Hickling Broad Sailing Club.  At Hickling we will be able to enjoy sailing on the largest of Norfolk’s Broads\, where it is possible to have a great sail with the wind in any direction. Hickling Broad is a sailing area in itself of such natural beauty and interest that the RYA has published a 4 mile Dinghy Trail around the Broad with a start and finish close to the Sailing Club. (Hickling Broad Dinghy Trail (rya .org.uk) \nFrom the southern end of Hickling Broad\, at Heigham Sound (free mooring)\, there are three choices.  One is to take Meadow Dyke to Horsey Mere. This is a narrow channel abundant with wildlife. An alternative means of propulsion may well be required. The wide expanse of water at Horsey makes for good sailing. Moorings (fee applies) and a café are available at Horsey Staithe. Horsey is the closest Broadland village to the coast (lovely 2 mile walk across the marshes to the beach)\, an area of outstanding natural beauty\, a place to explore both the river and sandy beaches\, and\, next to the café\, has the largest of windpumps on the Broads.  \nAnother choice will be to go further on the Broads river network and take the river Thurne to the bustling riverside village of Potter Heigham\, known for its medieval bridge (free mooring\, pub\, coffee shop\, café\, supermarket). This is where it becomes important to get the tides right and to go beyond Potter Heigham\, to be adept at dropping and raising your mast to pass under the bridge.  (You will need oars / paddle / outboard as there are 2 low bridges about 500 metres apart.) From there we can continue to the beautiful wooded Womack Water (free mooring\, pub & shops via short walk to Ludham village)  \nIf you don’t want to lower the mast\, there’s a lovely sail across Martham Broad nature reserve to West Somerton.  A great place to see Marsh Harriers\, and the water can be crystal clear if the conditions are right).  No facilities\, but free mooring.  \n Any Wanderer sailors wishing to stay on to Sunday 6th are welcome to join the club race. \nThere will be no safety boat support. Cruising-in-company is recommended. Note. You will need a Broads Authority short visit permit for sailing in the area – WCOA will look into providing this for members at a subsidised rate.  \n  \nBookings and Accommodation  \nBoats at Hickling Broad SC: £10.50 per day per boat or £26.50 for up to 4 nights\, arriving Tuesday 1st October. Bookings and payment are open via the WCOA website: See the tickets below. Boats may extend their stay overnight on the 5th/6th to take part in the club race on Sunday 6th October. Payment includes temporary membership of Hickling Broad SC and the small commission charge on WCOA website transactions. \nBookings will close at the end of Monday 16 September 2024.  \nHickling Campsite\, Heath Road\, Hickling\, Norwich\, NR12 0AU\, will stay open for our members from October 1st until the afternoon of Saturday 5th October. SUMMARY:Cobnor Cruising and Coaching
DESCRIPTION:CRUISING \nSailors returning to the rural tranquility and natural beauty of Cobnor Point will be well accustomed to the arrangements for camping and cruising.  After a year’s absence\, we are delighted to be welcomed back to the Cobnor Estate by the new manager Holly Baker and owner Diana Beale. Hot showers will now be provided. We have the full week from Sunday September 1st to Sunday September 8th with exclusive use of the site to camp and sail for any or all of the days. Tides are favourable for day cruising. \n Cruising will take place each day\, Monday to Saturday\, on the principle of cruising-in-company (with free sailing on either Sunday)\, subject to the weather and preference. As there will be no support boat sailors should be competent and equipped to sail independently in marine conditions. We will start with a briefing at 10 am to be on the water by 11 am. Destinations may include Dell Quay\, East Head\, Thorney\, Emsworth and Langstone. Or do your own pottering. The slipway has an electronic winch for recovery of boats. \nFor camping\, tents or motorhomes\, select a pitch in the field known as Sea Park North and South. Campers should park their cars in the field. The visitor car park field to the left of the lane on arrival is the place\, nearest to the shore\, also to park boats. The loos and showers are located near the boat park. Depending on numbers we may complement Cobnor Estate facilities by renting a mobile loo-block for the camping field. \nWe have also reserved the option of accommodation at the adjacent Cobnor Activities Centre. The Centre is located immediately to the N shore side of Cobnor Estate and is linked by a footpath. WCOA members would be the only group staying in the Log Cabin or Trinity buildings. \nWhether camping or staying at the Centre the two sites are close together and cruisers can all meet up\, sail and socialise as a group. Self-catering will again be the norm. Members may also enjoy rambling around the lovely country and coastal walks. Dogs are welcome so long as your dog doesn’t bark a lot\, is under control at all times and poop in the camping field is scooped. The local pub at Chidham may well be the focus of evening activities. Ian not only built Wanderers but also knows as a racer how to sail a Wanderer well and fast. Race coaching will also be in conjunction with Cobnor Activities Centre. \n  \nTo help ensure that these courses meet individual requirements there will be a ratio of one safety / coaching boat per three Wanderers. DESCRIPTION:The event is based at Ullswater Yacht Club on the quiet road to Howtown on the north east side of the lake. We plan daily cruises to places such as Howtown\, Aira Force and Glenridding at the head of the lake with perhaps an odd race.. With Hellevyn raising above the lake\, Ullswater is seen by many as the most scenic lake. There will be a full programme of evening social events. Facilities at Ullswater Yacht Club are excellent. There is camping on site with hotels\, bed and breakfast\, caravan and self catering accommodation nearby. Due to planning conditions camper vans can only stay at the club on Friday and Saturday nights on the Birkett Fields\, but there are two caravan sites which all but next door.\n \nBookings\n \nThe day rate is £30 per person a day\, with camping at £20 a night (camper vans £25). DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately WandererFest 2024 has been cancelled. \nOwing to the exceptional high tide\, low pressure and storm force wind experienced over the night of 8th – 9th April the sea came over the seawall at Mengeham Rythe SC\, flooding the club house and campus to a depth of 8 feet. Property\, equipment\, boats and facilities have suffered extensive damage submerged by the sea water lake.  Although the clean-up has started\, the club will not be in a position to host the event  this year. Our thoughts are very much with Melvyn Powell and MRSC volunteer members\, some of whom have also suffered flood damage to their homes\, as they set about the task. \nMembers with bookings will be issued a refund.

DESCRIPTION:Wanderer Scotland\nSaturday 18th – Monday 20th May 2024 \nINFORMATION \n\nThe first ever event of the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association to be held in Scotland will be at Tighnabruaich on the Kyles of Bute: sheltered coastal waters and stunning scenery.\nBased at Tighnabruaich Sailing School\, Carry Farm\, 3 miles south of the village. On site camping overlooking the shore\, space for motorhomes and three lodges available to hire + other nearby accommodation options.\nBoats can be left on site before and after the weekend\, if combining the event with a longer holiday in Scotland. Apart from sailing\, enjoy walking\, historic houses\, local crafts\, an indoor swimming pool and breath-taking views.\nA three day event: arrive Friday 17 th May; cruises with safety boat escort on Saturday 18th\, Sunday 19th and Monday 20th. SUMMARY:Weekend Racing at West Oxfordshire SC
DESCRIPTION:Wanderer and Wayfarer Racing at West Oxfordshire Sailing Club \nSaturday April 20th and Sunday April 21st \n  \nThis would have been the 7th joint event however having cancelled 2020 and 2021 due to COVID\, 2024 will be the 5th year everyone gathers for this joint event.  The club is located 6 miles from Witney on the B4449.  By comparison to others our lake is smaller which makes for some interesting racing around the marks.  WOSC is a recognised RYA Training Centre.  There are ample slipways and plenty of parking for visitor cars and boats.  There is 24 hour access to the club and the clubhouse which is fully equipped with a kitchen\, bar and changing rooms\, toilets etc.  Visitors can bring campervans\, caravans or camp on the ample grass area from Friday 19th allowing plenty of time for those who wish to rig the night before through to Sunday 21st.  For those that want greater comfort there is a Premier Inn and Travelodge in Witney and of course B&B’s/Airbnb in the local area. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAn entry fee of £35.00 is payable on the day or on the club web site. The fee will be paid by the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association for a boat having a helm or crew that is a paid up member.  \nThere will be three races on the Saturday starting at 1200 and two back to back races on the Sunday from 1000 to allow visitors to travel home in good time.  On both Saturday and Sunday morning bacon/sausage rolls will be available at a small cost. Lunch at £4 will be available on Saturday and Sunday at  for club racers and of course visitors. Racing Rules 27.1 and 40 will be changed to the effect that buoyancy aids are required. The changes will appear in full in the Sailing Instructions. Competitors should note that West Oxfordshire Sailing Club implements the RYA Racing Competitors will be required to undertake to sail in compliance with the Charter\, which can be found at the front of the RYA rule book and at the point of event entry.\nEligibility & Entry: The regatta is open to all boats of the Wayfarer and Wanderer classes. DESCRIPTION:Details\nThe Wanderer National Championship Races are to be sailed for the WCOA Ian Proctor trophy\, the Gavin Barr trophy. the WCOA Shepherd Runner-Up trophy\, the first all-female boat\, the Start as You Mean to Go On cannon\, and other prizes. \nThe Nationals follow the WandererEast cruising event\, 30th August – 1st September\, cruising from Whitstable YC in the Swale estuary and creeks. WandererEast participants are welcome to enter for the Nationals. \nSaturday 2nd September. 2 races are scheduled\, back to back. The event will take place alongside WYC club racing. 1st Race 14.00\n10.30 Registration opens. All participants shall register with the WYC.\n12.00 Briefing\n13.54 The warning signal for the first race on Saturday will not be before this time. \nSunday 3rd September. 2 races are sailed alongside WYC club racing. 1 st Race 14.00 \nDiscard. In the event of all 4 races being sailed\, the lowest score of a boat will be discarded. \nThe entry fee of £30 per boat is payable to Whitstable Yacht Club.
