Mast Lowering Sequence.   Sketches to be read in conjunction with text & photos.

Identification of numbered items within the sketches as :-
  1. New single block fitted to existing eyelet at end of forestay;
  2. New single block, with becket, fitted to foredeck/stemhead plate;
  3. Point of attachment of forestay with mast by shackle;
  4. New  'scissor' type wooded mast 'crutch' to support lowered mast;
  5. Pivot pin through tabanacle and mast.

Sketch 1:

Showing the mast erected with new forestay line routed through 2 new blocks and cleated off to maintain tension on forestay and help prevent tangles with roller furling gear [not shown]. All other running/standing rigging excluded for clarity.

Sketch 2:
Here the mast is half way through being lowered. The mast pivots around the pin at 5 while the forestay line is played out in a controlled way to permit the mast to be gradually lowered onto the supporting 'crutch'. Crew helps by steadying the mast and keeping an eye out for snagging lines.  Also feeds jib halyard into mast foot block.
Sketch 3:

Here the mast is fully lowered and it's weight is resting in the mast crutch. The forestay line is all played out and the jib/jenoa halyard has been fed fully up the mast to allow the sail to lay furled within the boat parallel to the mast.  Crew tidies up boat and stows all lines, helm steers with engine or paddles with crew.
