Eighteen Wanderers, including three past
champions came to Hayling Island for their
2005 championships and to celebrate the silver jubilee of the
class. As David Nicholls, the Commodore of HISC commented, the
class raced in a relaxed style with shore breaks for lunch and an entertaining
dinner on the Saturday night.
On the water, the father and son team of Mike & James Clayton started
the first race at the pin end and established an early lead over
the remainder of the fleet most of whom opted
to start in the more favourable tide at the
committee boat end. Defending champions Gavin
Barr and Mark Skipper powered down the reaches to take second with
Wickenden and Mann third.
Race 2 was a similar story with the Claytons cleanly away at the pin end
to establish an early lead. Downwind they looked vulnerable and
slick spinnaker work from Wickenden and Mann
was almost enough for them to break through.
By the third race the fleet's starting was getting more aggressive, and
the lead changed a couple of times with the Claytons faster
upwind and losing out
down the reaches and runs. The result was a win for
Wickenden and Mann with the Claytons second. Gavin Barr managed
third despite a close tussle with David and
Jill Davies.
Lack of water on Sunday morning restricted the fleet to a windward
leeward course, which started in a steady force 2. The Claytons
managed to create space at the pin end of the
line to cross the fleet on port and quickly
established a lead over Wickenden and Mann and the Davies'.
On the third lap the wind died and the beginnings of a sea breeze
came in reversing the wind direction. The
Davies' profited from this and challenged the
Clayton's for the lead, only to be swept too far down
tide just as the course was shortened at the next mark. The
Claytons won to clinch the Championship with a
race to spare, and son James took an
involuntary celebratory swim.
The final race was held after lunch with a beat into the incoming tide.
Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper established an early lead with the
Claytons, Wickenden and Mann, the Davies and
former champion Andy Whitelock crewed by
daughter Rebecca in close contention. The upwind speed of the
Clayton's eventually allowed them to clinch second place in the
race with Gavin Barr's race win enough to give
him and Mark Skipper second place overall.
Wickenden and Mann finished third in the race and third
overall. The Whitelock's fourth in the
race gave them fifth place overall behind
David and Jill Davies.
