Wanderer Class Owners’ Association Inland Championships

Saturday 6th / Sunday 7th October 2007

Bewl Water reservoir, the largest stretch of open water in south east England, and it’s ours for the whole weekend.  Set in 800 acres of beautiful scenery near Lamberhurst, in Kent, Bewl attracts more than 200,000 visitors a year. It can hold more than 31,000 million litres of water - enough to supply nearly 200 million people with water each day.

Your probably bored now and wondering why I am telling you all this. It’s because I want to encourage you to attend your Inland Championships. In particular it would be good to see those cruiser & potterer folk who we rarely see at these events. Don’t be put off by the term “Championship”. Wanderer sailing is a fairly relaxed affair. In essence all the super sailors zoom off leaving the rest of fleet wondering ‘how do they do that!’  But, there is no doubt, racing does improve your general sailing skills and it will help you sail your Wanderer more efficiently and safer.  So why not give the last race of the season a try. If you sign on and then find it’s all a bit too much, or you get board while waiting for the rest of us to catch up – you could always go off for a sail around the lake instead. Think of the advantages:-

o           high tide throughout the day

o           toilet, bar & food on the spot

o           outboard, kedge anchor & boat tent, not required. Think of all the space you’ll have.

If it turns cold and you don’t want to sail at all, you can dress up warmly and go bird watching.  There is even a Kite (not the bird) weekend going on at the same time – Phone 01892 890661 for details

Now the details

The Saturday start has been timed to make travelling easier. The first race starts at 11:30 to avoid Friday night travelling. A Saturday morning early start makes for easy travelling, even on the M25.  On Sunday, we are aiming for an early afternoon getaway. There are three races on Saturday and only two on Sunday.  On Saturday evening we are having a meal at The Chequers at Lamberhurst.  (old coaching Inn)  There is plenty of accommodation in the area and there is camping near at Cedar Gables. See list at the bottom of the Notice of Race on our web site.

If I have convinced you, please get the entry form (attached) back to me ASAP. if you’re in doubt, or need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Last thing: don’t expect a long letter like this for every invitation.

Best regards & happy sailing.
