WANDERER CHICHESTER HARBOUR CRUISE 8 JULY 2006

Sailing down from Bosham quay on the morning of the Wanderer Chichester Harbour cruise we wondered if there would be enough wind to get to East Head where we hoped to end up for lunch and a swim.

By the time we got to Cobnor near the entrance to Bosham creek we realised we could leave the engine on land and rely on wind power.

Seven boats arrived at Cobnor by road and joined five local boats, four from Bosham. A group of 12 made for a decent turnout and there was a good mixture of all ages .

The general consensus was to sail up Thorney Channel for a look around, followed by a stop at Pilsey Island before going on to East Head. This was hoped to be followed by a sail to Hayling Island for an ice cream before returning home.

By the time we were at the waters edge the wind had increased nicely and one or two with young children or single handers decided to put in a precautionary reef.

Two patrol boats supported us although the second could not keep up with the speed of the Wanderers as we entered the main Chichester Harbour waters! We had a very good, albeit wet, sail deciding to stop at Pilsey straight away – some being rather pleased to hit land!

We then had concern about three boats who did not make it – had one gone on to East Head? What happened to the one who went on the mud bank right opposite the Cobnor start? One went back to Cobnor, seeing the conditions, but not three? Patrol boats were sent off in all directions. We were then hearing of large swells and stronger winds off Hayling Island.

Pilsey Island seemed a good place to stop and have lunch after all.

As the winds blew up it was more reefs or sailing just under a jib to run back to Cobnor.

It was with much relief we saw all three lost boats back in Cobnor and the only mishap was in front of the launching area; one Wanderer turned over on their way in, having caught their main sheet on the bow of a moored boat. At least the water was warm!

Despite a far shorter sail than planned we had a good sail, warm weather and an excellent game of rounders back at Cobnor after tea and cakes!

We hope to see you all next year – plus a few more.
