Wanderer Cruising Weekend on Windermere 20th - 22nd May 2005

Windermere is the biggest of the lakes in the English Lake District, being 17km long, up to 2km wide and 64 metres at its deepest point. The views of the fells can be spectacular, the steep hills can also make the winds ‘interesting’ – we had 40mph winds last year so this year statistically we should be fine – trust us!

We shall start our Saturday cruise at Ferry Nab, on the road to the Hawkshead ferry, in Bowness on Windermere. There is secure boat parking for about 5 boats and a slipway (with car access if required). The fees for the car park are for each 24h period so from Friday evening to Sunday evening we should be able to only pay for 2 x 24h. Costs therefore are:

Car park £3.00 per 24h £6
Slipway £6.00 one off £6
Boat storage £5.00 per night £10

There may be some room for negotiation depending on numbers so early confirmation would be appreciated. Outboards incur a further fee of £9.50 per year.

Fenders would be useful.

Our aim is to sail the length of the lake if possible, by going south one day and north the other. In order to get as far as we can we’d like to be on the water at 10am on Saturday. Picnic lunches will be taken either ashore or possibly on a buoy, places to stop are limited as much of the lake shore is privately owned but if we can get to Fell Foot there are landing stages toilets and a café!

There is lots of accommodation of all sorts in Bowness and Windermere, tourist information will be able to tell you more if you have no B&B books! We’ll organise a group meal on the Saturday night in Bowness subject to numbers, please let us know if and how many places you would like. Please phone 01260 270841 or e-mail mike.brenton@virgin.net.

Hope to see you there.
