Westcountry Cruise 19th & 20th August
2010 |
|
The cruise will be based from Noss Marina (www.nossmarina.co.uk), which in itself has a maritime history. Previously the site of Philips boatyard, it employed hundreds of local men to build lightships for Trinity House. Its fame bought in orders from the Admiralty, the Sultan of Zanzibar and Chay Blythe, who chose Philip and Son to build his record-breaking boat British Steel in 1970. During the war the shipyard built 250 vessels as part of the war effort. We shall be launching down the original Philips slipway, which is soon to be converted into a deep water mooring, so your last chance to be a small part of its past glories. As you will see, the cruise is being held on weekdays, but it is hoped this will not detract from its popularity and you will take the opportunity to extend your break over the weekend and enjoy all that the area has to offer. We shall attempt to sail all the way to Totnes for a late lunch on a flooding tide, stopping either at the head of Bow Creek (Tuckenhay) or at Sharpham vineyard for coffee. On our return, we shall enjoy a cream tea at Ian Proctor's old haunt at Duncannon. On the second day, weather permitting, we shall head out to sea and venture around to Scabbacombe Sands, north east of Dartmouth. Lorraine Fleming, Administration Manage is looking after our arrangements at Noss Marina. We shall be charged £100 for the two days; use of their toilet and shower facilities and ample space for parking and rigging. We shall divide the sum between the participants. A meal will be arranged on Thursday evening at a local hostelry, probably The Floating Bridge on the Dartmouth side of the river by the upper ferry. All within walking distance of the Marina - if you include the ferry crossing. Please look at the Dartmouth Tourist Office website for accommodation / camping: http://www.dartmouthtouristinformation.co.uk/ Those of you who attended the Tamar cruise last year, will know that we introduced the 'Wanderers' Have Talent' competition. Mike and Alison won the 'Old Swingers' trophy with their extraordinary jive performance. This year, the competition will be re- run on Thursday evening, so please consider whether your talent extends to singing, oration, playing a musical instrument or yes, even dancing or leading games. Nothing is barred providing it entertains!! I look forward to seeing you there. Any questions - please contact me. David Davies davejilld@hotmail.com Tel: 01364 631322
