Broads Cruise Saturday, Sunday &
Monday 3, 4 & 5 May 2008
Exploring the River Yare and local broads from Reedham Ferry
Advice to Participants:
all
helms and crews taking part do so at their own risk. participation is at the
sole and absolute discretion of each individual. neither the organiser,
it is the responsibility of each boat owner to ensure that they have effective
and valid marine insurance for their dinghy, including third party cover for at
least £2,000,000.
all helms and crews must wear personal buoyancy all times whilst afloat.
Inland Sailing
Helm should be able to manoeuvre boat in a moderate breeze (up
to Force 4) without risk of colliding with accompanying Wanderers.
The rivers are tidal so care should be taken to note the
direction of tidal flow.
The rivers are narrow and beating to windward can demand lengthy
periods of sharp tacking by the helm and crew.
To pass under low bridges crews will need to lower and raise
their Wanderer masts, rigging a long tail on the forestay and practising
beforehand can make this easier.

Safety:
Please note - NO SAFETY BOAT COVER is provided on WCOA cruises
Masthead Buoyancy –
Cruising in shallow waters it is sensible to use masthead buoyancy which should
prevent accidental inversion of the dinghy and the mast getting stuck in the
mud, making recovery from capsize easier. Many solutions are available, the
cheapest being a large plastic milk or squash bottle tied to the masthead.
Engines / Alternative Propulsion – An engine or decent oars might help ensure a timely return to Reedham
if the wind fails or tide turns foul. Beating up the narrow channels against
the wind and tide can be challenging and fun, but not if it is raining, cold
and getting dark!
Hypothermia - Make
sure your clothing is appropriate for the conditions, bring a change of clothes
in a waterproof container and wind/waterproofs at a minimum.
Forecasting - Live
weather information from http://www.norfolk-broads.org/weather/weather.asp
Communications – Carrying
a mobile phone in a waterproof bag is sensible and will allow you to call for
help or report to other cruise participants if you are delayed or retire from
the cruise at any point
Reporting
in / out - Crews will be expected to report to the organiser if they
intend to depart from the suggested route. The organiser will be monitoring the
participation and safe return of all boats – this will require the co-operation
of participating crews.
