Exploring Southampton Water and / or Hamble /  Beaulieu / Medina Rivers from Calshot Activity Centre

Advice to Participants:

all helms and crews taking part do so at their own risk. participation is at the sole and absolute discretion of each individual. neither the organiser, Calshot Activity Centre or the wcoa accept any responsibility or liability arising from any accident or other incident during this event.

it is the responsibility of each boat owner to ensure that they have effective and valid marine insurance for their dinghy, including third party cover for at least £2,000,000.

all helms and crews must wear personal buoyancy all times whilst afloat.

Sea Sailing

Both helm and crew should be experienced in handling their boat in a strong breeze and moderate to rough seas (Force 5+) and be competent at capsize recovery (including inversion), reefing afloat, and anchoring. They should be aware of tides, and able to use their own chart / pilotage information of the area for passage planning.

Boat Launch:

Calshot Activity Centre, Fawley SO45 1BR – Group charge for 5+ boats £11.60 to park car and trailer all day including slipway charge, payable to cruise organiser on the day. Slipway is shared with the RNLI station, so don’t leave boats / trailers unattended that may impede launch of lifeboat.

Safety:

Please note - NO SAFETY BOAT COVER is provided

Masthead Buoyancy – Cruising in open tidal waters it is sensible to use masthead buoyancy which should prevent inversion of the dinghy, making recovery from capsize easier. Many solutions are available, the cheapest being a large plastic milk or squash bottle tied to the masthead.

Engines / Alternative Propulsion – Should we head into the Solent we will be pushing across or against a substantial tidal flow to get back to Calshot. An engine or decent oars might help ensure a timely return and allow us to explore the rivers.

Hypothermia - Make sure your clothing is appropriate for the conditions, bring a change of clothes in a waterproof container and wind/waterproofs at a minimum.

Forecasting - Live weather information from http://www.isleofwightweather.com/live/.

Communications - Carry flares or some other effective means of calling for assistance and ensure you know how to use them.

Navigation - Bring a compass and chart of the Solent area – e.g. Imray C15 on waterproof paper or equivalent.

Commercial Shipping – This area of the Solent is used by very large commercial vessels – ensure you understand Collision Regulations, sound signals and local regulations – especially regarding the ‘Precautionary Area’ to the South and West of Bramble Bank

Reporting in / out - Crews will be expected to report to the organiser if they intend to depart from the suggested route. The organiser will be monitoring the participation and safe return of all boats – this will require the co-operation of participating crews.
