Advice to Participants:
all
helms and crews taking part do so at their own risk. participation is at the
sole and absolute discretion of each individual. neither the organiser, Calshot
Activity Centre or the wcoa accept any responsibility or liability arising from
any accident or other incident during this event.
it is the responsibility of each boat owner to ensure that they have effective
and valid marine insurance for their dinghy, including third party cover for at
least £2,000,000.
all helms and crews must wear personal buoyancy all times whilst afloat.
Sea Sailing
Both helm and crew
should be experienced in handling their boat in a strong breeze
and moderate to rough seas (Force 5+) and be competent at capsize recovery
(including inversion), reefing afloat, and anchoring. They should be aware of
tides, and able to use their own chart / pilotage information of the area for
passage planning.
Boat Launch:
Calshot Activity Centre, Fawley SO45 1BR – Group charge for 5+ boats
£11.60 to park car and trailer all day including slipway charge, payable to cruise
organiser on the day. Slipway is shared with the RNLI station, so don’t leave
boats / trailers unattended that may impede launch of lifeboat.

Masthead Buoyancy –
Cruising in open tidal waters it is sensible to use masthead buoyancy which
should prevent inversion of the dinghy, making recovery from capsize easier.
Many solutions are available, the cheapest being a large plastic milk or squash
bottle tied to the masthead.
Engines / Alternative Propulsion – Should we head into the
Hypothermia - Make
sure your clothing is appropriate for the conditions, bring a change of clothes
in a waterproof container and wind/waterproofs at a minimum.
Forecasting - Live

Communications - Carry
flares or some other effective means of calling for assistance and ensure you
know how to use them.
Navigation - Bring a
compass and chart of the

Shipping – This area of the
Reporting
in / out - Crews will be expected to report to the organiser if they
intend to depart from the suggested route. The organiser will be monitoring the
participation and safe return of all boats – this will require the co-operation
of participating crews.
